Free Arabic Learning Resources – Arabic is a language I haven’t crossed paths with for a long time. In 2013 I visited Morocco, and even though I already knew French, I decided to learn some basic Arabic for the trip.
I ended up mostly using French, although “laa, shukraan” was very handy to say “no, thank you” when I arrived somewhere new or walked across Jemaa el-Fnaa, the square in Marrakech.

Since then, it’s a language I haven’t had the opportunity to learn in detail, which is why I asked Twitter to help me share some of the best resources for learning Arabic with you. Thanks to everyone who shared the resources mentioned below!
Speak In Arabic – This is a great resource from Donovan of The Mezzofanti Guild, who has been immersed in various Arabic dialects over the years.
ArabicPod101 – I love the Pod101 series! See how you can use it every day with this post inspired by my Japanese studies with the Japanese version of this tool.
Learn Arabic with Maha – People kept recommending this channel when I asked on Twitter and there’s plenty here to get you started.

Arabic Online – This site has a bunch of free resources to help you learn the basics.
Madinah Arabic – Lots of lessons here for people who can and can’t already read Arabic. If you can’t, start with their Arabic reading course. Yippee!
Live Lingua – There are tons of free resources for many different dialects on Live Lingua. This link is for MSA, Modern Standard Arabic.

Audio is a great way to learn Arabic. You can take it with you wherever you go, like on your commute or when you run out to the corner store. You can also listen while doing chores around the house.
In this list, I have selected Arabic podcasts and audios that provide a step-by-step Arabic class, or teach Arabic as it is spoken in real life.

After that, you’ll have to pay for the more advanced lessons and premium content, but it’s well worth it.
Language Translation is a popular Arabic language course designed for intensive learning. It is similar to the Michel Thomas method.
You can listen to radio from many Arabic-speaking countries on TuneIn. Try a few stations based on the dialect you want to learn, see what catches your attention.
Forvo is a great place to listen to Arabic words spoken by a native speaker. It has a large database and is a good reference for pronunciation.

YouTube is a great place to learn Arabic online. Videos have the added benefit of allowing you to see facial expressions, body language and other non-verbal aspects of the Arabic language.
In addition to their free podcast lessons, ArabicPod101 has an excellent YouTube channel with hours of free content.
In the Easy Arabic series, the presenters take to the streets of Cairo, Egypt and interview the people they meet there.
It’s a great way to hear how people speak real Arabic. You will pick up Arabic expressions and improve your listening comprehension.
N&m: 5 Awesome (free Online) Resources For Arabic Learners
The slightly animated cartoons on Learn Arabic with Zakaria are a cute way to learn the language. The channel is aimed at children, but is suitable for all primary teachers.
If you are interested in learning the Lebanese Arabic dialect, the channel Learn Lebanese Arabic by Hiba Najem will be of particular interest. He currently has more than 75 lessons.
When you are just starting out with Arabic, it can be helpful to follow a structured Arabic course. Here are three of my favorite free Arabic courses:

Apps are a convenient way to learn a new language, especially for those who like to study on the go.
Memrise and Anki are flashcard systems that you can use to create your own Arabic vocabulary. You can download decks already created by other users.
Duolingo is a popular language learning application that introduces you to Arabic vocabulary and grammar. It’s a gamified platform, so it’s fun to learn and easy to maintain your daily streaks.
