 # How To Convert Decimals To Fractions

How To Convert Decimals To Fractions – I quickly stop (time is very short today!) to share a connection diagram I created with my students during a lesson on converting fractions and decimals.

I was thinking how to introduce this skill, but decided to use good old coins! They had the background knowledge they needed and it would be in a familiar form.

You know how sometimes you’re in the middle of a lesson and think to yourself, “Man, I wish management would come by now!”? This was one of those lessons.

This anchor chart looks busy now that it’s done, but when I started teaching the lesson, it was a blank canvas. I’ve run it through every single note on this chord chart and you can see how we’ve progressed through the skill.

I started by asking them to tell me the dollar amount of the bill. One of course. Then I asked them what a penny was worth. One of course! Except… no! We talked about the value of one penny against the entire dollar. They concluded that the entire dollar is 100 parts compared to a penny. We wrote a fraction and printed it in words. Then we wrote it as a decimal number. We made some other examples (2p, 3p, etc.) and pasted a 100 chart to represent the value of a penny.

We continued down the same path for dimes, then dimes, then quarters. When we got to quarters, I started showing them how to convert fractions so that their denominators would be 10 or 100. This was where it made the most sense to me because they were all familiar with the idea that 1/4 of a dollar is one quarter.

The whole lesson only lasted about 20 minutes, but we had almost fully mastered the skill. It was easy for them to imagine that way. I definitely left the lesson feeling very happy with how it went!

Then I gave them some decimal cards to make basic charts in their notebooks with pictures, fractions, and decimals. They were very pleased with themselves for achieving success so quickly.

We don’t have more practice with this so I made a new deck of task cards to play two quick games of SCOOT with. These task cards are a perfect choice for SCOOT because they are so quick to solve. The first group is select and the second group is add.

It involves looking at how many decimal places the decimal number has and putting the decimal part as numerator and denominator as “1” followed by the same number of zeros as there are decimal places.

### Convert Decimals To Fractions

The main takeaway from these definitions is that decimals and fractions are different ways of representing the same thing – a number that is not an integer.

Step 1: Rewrite the decimal number over one (as a fraction where the decimal number is the numerator and the denominator is one).

Step 2: Multiply the numerator and denominator by 10 to the number of digits after the decimal point. If there is one value after the decimal point, multiply by 10, if there are two, multiply by 100, if there are three, multiply by 1000, etc.

If converting 0.25 to a fraction, there are two digits after the decimal point. Since 10 to the second power is 100, we need to multiply both the numerator and denominator by 100 in the second step.

By following these three steps in the decimal fraction example above, you can deduce that the 0.25 decimal point, when converted to a fraction, is equal to 1/4.

Note that the answer in this example is a mixed number (a combination of an integer and a fraction).

If you need a quick and easy way to convert a decimal number to a fraction, you can take advantage of the many free online decimal to fraction calculators available.

This free decimal calculator from www.calculatorsoup.com not only performs the conversion, but also shows the calculations (using the three-step method described above), and is a useful tool because it will help you not only to find the right answer, but to understand the process.

To convert the trailing decimal point to a fraction, type all digits after the decimal point. Divide this number by a multiple of 10 where there are as many zeros as there are digits after the decimal point. For example, if the decimal point is 0.325, write 325 at the top of the fraction and 1000 at the bottom. Simplify the fraction by dividing the top and bottom numbers by their greatest common factor.
