How To Convert Fraction To A Decimal – Before learning the easy way to do these two conversions with or without a calculator, you need to understand what decimals and fractions are.
An important takeaway from these definitions is that decimals and fractions are different ways of representing the same thing (non-integer numbers).
How To Convert Fraction To A Decimal
Step 1: Rewrite the decimal number as 1 (as a fraction with the numerator as the decimal and the denominator as 1).
Converting Between Decimals And Fractions
Step 2: Multiply the numerator and denominator by 10 by the number of decimal places. If there is one value after the decimal point, multiply by 10, if there are two, multiply by 100, if there are three, multiply by 1,000, and so on.
Converting 0.25 to a fractional number has two decimal places. 10 to the power of 2 is 100, so in the second step we need to multiply both the numerator and denominator by 100.
Following these three steps in the decimal-to-fraction example above, you can conclude that the decimal point 0.25 equals 1/4 when converted to a fraction.
The answer in this example is a fraction (a combination of an integer and a fraction).

If you need a quick and easy way to convert decimals to fractions, you can take advantage of the many free online decimal to fraction converters available.
This free decimal to fraction calculator from www.calculatorsoup.com not only performs the conversion, but also displays the result of the calculation (using the 3-step method shown above). I understand the process as well as the answers.
To use the decimal fraction calculator, enter a decimal value and press Calculate. Depending on the value entered, the calculator converts decimals to fractions or to fractions.
There is also a decimal to fraction calculator (follow the instructions on the webpage to perform this function).

The point is that decimals and fractions are different ways of representing non-whole numbers.
Mixed Fractions To Decimal
The decimal display uses “part of” the value to the right of the decimal point and the whole to the value to the left. In a fraction, the numerator represents the part and the denominator represents the whole.
As noted in Math Net, the key to converting fractions to decimals involves long division. So this means we can convert fractions to decimals if we can divide them!
Now all we need to do is convert fractions to decimals by following the rules for dividing decimals and whole numbers.
Our goal is to convert 3/5 from a fraction to a decimal. All we need to do is perform decimal division with a dividend of 3 and a divisor of 5.

Similar to the previous example, what we want is to convert 9/16 to decimal form using long division.
So, if you know how to divide by decimals, you can easily convert fractions to decimals!
Sometimes you need to add, subtract, multiply or divide. This means that all fractions must be converted to decimals and vice versa before performing the operation.
For example, if Edmonds’ dog weighs 30.6 pounds and Lucy’s dog weighs 25 3/4 pounds, what is the weight of the two together?
Convert Each Of The Following Fractions Into A Decimal
However, the values are not of the same type, so we need to convert 25 and 3/4 to decimals before adding the two weights.
Sometimes you are asked to compare fractions with decimals or to list values in ascending order.

Converting regular fractions to decimals is easy once you get the hang of it. Use simple division, multiplication, or use a calculator if you don’t want to do it by hand. If you learn to master this technique, you can easily convert fractions and decimals.

To convert regular fractions to decimals using long division, first write the fraction as a division problem. For example, if the common fraction is ¾, put the 4 outside the division parentheses and the 3 inside the parentheses. Then place a zero with a decimal point above the parentheses to indicate that the answer is less than one. Also put a decimal point and a zero after the 3. Finally, we use long division to get 0.75 as the answer. Scroll down to learn more, including how to divide fractions by repeating decimals. I quickly stopped by to share the anchor plots and decimal points I made with my students in my class on fractional conversions (time is so short these days!).

After thinking about how to introduce this skill, I decided to use some good old coins! They have the necessary background knowledge and use a familiar format.
Sometimes in class, “Hey, I want the administration to come in right now!” This is one of those lessons.
Now that the anchor diagram is complete, it looks busy, but when the class started, it was a blank canvas. We went through each note in this anchor chart step by step and you can see how you progressed through the skill.
I start by asking them to tell me the value of a one dollar bill. One, of course. Then I asked them how much a penny was worth. One of course! Except… No! We discuss the value of one penny to one dollar. They reasoned that a dollar is equal to 100 parts of a penny. We write down the fraction and then write it as a word. Then write it as a decimal number. I made a few more examples (2p, 3p, etc.) and pasted a graph of 100 representing the value of 1p.

We continue down the same path and buy 10 cents, 5 cents, and 15 cents. When we reach the quarter, we start showing how to convert fractions so that the denominator is either 10 or 100. This is the most logical place, as we are all used to the idea that 1/4 per dollar is 1/4.
The whole class is about 20 minutes long, but I basically mastered the technique. It’s easy to imagine it this way. I left the course very satisfied with how it was gone!
After that, I gave them some decimal point cards and asked them to create a basic diagram with visuals, fractions and decimals in their notebook. They are very excited about their success.
We didn’t have the practice to do that anymore, so we made a new set of mission cards to play two quick games of SCOOT with them. This task card is great for SCOOT because it can be solved very quickly. The first group is recognition and the second group is addition.
