Modern Standard Arabic Lessons – Preparation for the AL-ARABIYYA TEST at levels A1-B2 (CEFR) or beginner high and intermediate according to the American Council of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) rating scale.
Vocabulary and grammar are based on frequency analysis and communication requirements. The original texts have been selected from various fields such as history, society, religion, politics, sports, science and culture.

The student learns to manage different communication situations. In addition, cultural, religious and historical information is provided to achieve cultural competence.
Particular attention is paid to repeated and repetitive expressions of both written and spoken language, such as greetings, wishes, speeches, introductions, emotions, apologies, and proverbs and stereotyped phrases.
Since no one speaks Modern Arabic (MSA) as a native language and communication is heavily influenced by local dialects, students must be able to understand expressions, sentences and entire conversations in local dialects. Thus, this textbook follows a new approach to include Arabic dialects. Starting with Lesson 4, all conversational texts are recorded in MSA and dialects of the four main regions:

The original content is preserved, but the special features of the corresponding dialect are included to adequately express the content. Gradually, the students learn to follow conversations in the dialect. However, the students are not supposed to actively speak any dialect of Arabic.
With this textbook, the student will reach level A2 after lesson 12 and levels B1 to B2 after lesson 24 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This compares to beginner high and intermediate according to the American Council of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) rating scale.

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is today’s literary language of books, media and official communication throughout the Arab world, the region’s main common language of written and official conversation. The first book in this new series for the classroom is intended for adult learners in the beginning stages of the language.

I’ve spent some time going through it this past week, so I thought I’d share a bit about it with you. While I’m not going to review all the Arabic teaching/learning resources I find, this one caught my eye and that’s why I’m sharing it with you.
