The difference is the characteristic of the unknown quantity that you are trying to understand. To find an equivalent number, you must use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. When deciding which function to use, you must use the opposite function used in the equation. For example, the opposite of addition is subtraction, if you wanted to solve an equation with a plus sign, you would use subtraction because it is the opposite of addition. You know an equation is solved when you have a final solution variable equal to a number.

For example, the multiplication transformation is division, so if you were expecting to solve an equation with the multiplication symbol, you would use division because it is in the multiplication transformation.

One-step equations are equations that you can solve in one step, hence the term step equations. Usually, when solving a single step, you will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. The trick to solving one-step equations is to keep the equation balanced. This means that whatever you do on one side, you must do on the other side. Think of the equals sign as a type of divider that represents two equal sides and the two sides must always be equal. If you do surgery on one side, you should do the same operation on the other side.
If you look at our example here, we have ‘x’ plus 3 equals 4. We’re trying to solve for ‘x’. We want to know what x is equal to. To solve for x we need to multiply this by three. This combined with the third is in our way and we need to get rid of it. To remove this triple you must reverse it or do the opposite of the triple. In this example, the opposite of plus three is minus three so subtracting plus three will make minus three. The reason we do this is because the triplets in this direction are moving. Remember that our equal sign divides the equation into two sides that must always be equal. Whatever you do on one side, do the same on the other side of the equal sign. In this case, as we have done minus three on this side, we must also do minus three on the other side. Now you have 4 minus 3 which is 1. We have 1 on this side and all that’s left on our left side is x. This plus 3 is now canceled because we did subtract three and all that’s left here is x and four minus three is one so our solution is x equals one. I know we’re done simplifying when we have ‘x’ equal to the number on the other side of the equal sign. Let’s do some practice problems on our one-step equations worksheet.
The first problem we will complete to show you how to solve one-step equations is a single problem. This problem gives us ‘x’ plus one equals four. Now we know that whatever we do on one side of the equation, we must also do the other. In this example we have ‘x’ minus 1 equals 4. We need to do the opposite of -1 because we are trying to find ‘x’ on the side itself. To get x itself, we have to subtract this minus 1. The opposite of minus 1 is plus 1. We’re going to do plus 1 here so this minus 1 and this plus 1 cancels out and then whatever you do. do the same on the other side of the equal sign. Again we will add 1 to the left side and the remainder is x. Now we have our x, we have our equal sign in the middle, which we change, finally, we’re going to do 4 plus 1 to get a solution of 5. The solution to this one-step equation is x is equal. 5.

The next problem we will solve is the second number, which gives us ‘x’ equal to twenty one. Now the third ‘x’ is like saying ‘x’ three times. This is like saying that multiplying ‘x’ three times makes twenty one. The opposite of 3 multiplied by 3 or the opposite of multiplying by 3 divided by 3. We’re going to divide this side by 3 so that 3 divided by 3 cancels out. The 3 will cancel it out and we’re left with just x on this side and so whatever you do on one side you have to do on the other side. We also need to divide this side by 3 and 21 divided by 3 equals 7. Our solution is x equals 7.
The last problem we will complete on the one-step equations worksheet is the number seven. This problem gives us x minus 8 equals two. Now the opposite of minus eight plus eight. We’re trying to remove this minus eight because we want x alone on one side, so we’re going to add eight on that side and we’re going to do an 8 on the other side because whatever. you will do. one side you have to do another. This minus 8 and this plus 8 plus 8 cancel out and we’re left with ‘x’ which is equal to two plus eight on the other side of ten. Our solution for the number seven is x equals ten.
