Each week the first 6 words are focused on phonics or spelling. Like phonics-based reading instruction, phonics-based spelling deepens understanding of word patterns. So students don’t have to learn to write one word at a time. Instead, they will learn patterns that can be applied to each word. With phonics-based spelling, students will develop and improve their spelling skills for simple and complex words.

By the end of the year, students will have covered the concepts of Pre-Primer, Primer and First GradeDolch. These 133 words together make up more than half of the words we read and write. Knowing these key words will allow students to focus on generating ideas and writing negative sentences.
