Earlier this year I traveled to the land of Pharaoh. That’s right, I’m going to Egypt! The land of the most advanced civilization, hieroglyphs, the Nile, and the young king of pharaoh Tut.
Ever since I was 9 years old, I dreamed of going to Egypt to see the Great Pyramids of Giza. I dreamed of tracing the history of many historical figures, immortalized in blockbusters from the Golden Age of Hollywood such as Cleopatra and The Ten Commandments, and more recently The Mummy.
How Long Does It Take To Learn Arabic?
Although I have been traveling the world for the past 12 years, for whatever reason, I have never fulfilled my childhood dream. Now that dream has turned into a passion project.
If you’re a regular Intrepid Guide follower, you’ll know that I’m a firm believer in learning the local language before traveling to a foreign country. Even learning a few basic phrases can dramatically change the way you see and use an area.
There is nothing like sharing those moments where you bond with the locals as you slip on their tongues and smile on their faces. There is a special kind of connection that is made when the other person knows that you have taken the time to talk to them and try to speak their language, however poorly expressed.
With that in mind, I set myself the challenge of learning a foreign language to a native English speaker. I’m learning Arabic! …or at least try harder than me. Best Resources To Learn Arabic
With three months to fly, I’ve set my sights on learning as much as I can so I can do the basics like order falafel (obviously!), introduce myself, and ask someone out. What? general happiness exchange.
Although there are many different spoken varieties of Arabic, I am fortunate that the most well known and understood is Egyptian Arabic.
I chose Rosetta Stone because it is suitable for learning languages like Arabic. Arabic is a language that is not very familiar to English speakers and is difficult to get started with using traditional learning methods. Rosetta Stone is also the father of language learning software so I’m sure it will guide me through this language task.
I start the Rosetta Stone app every day to complete a few exercises and work on their unit. I know it will be a steep learning curve as I familiarize my ears with Arabic vowels and sounds. I can even get some good Arabic music to break things up a bit. What? do you have a suggestion?
