Learning a new alphabet can be difficult for beginners. But with this guide, it will be as easy as alif, baa, taa, i.e. A, B, T, the first three letters of the Arabic alphabet!

Reading and writing Arabic with the Arabic alphabet is not as difficult as it seems. It can be intimidating for English speakers because of the unfamiliar Arabic characters.

Ultimately, learning to read Arabic means you have to “learn” some habits that are second nature to English speakers.

Bonus: You might be surprised to learn that Arabic characters make up the written alphabet of various languages, including Persian, Malayalam, Urdu, Central Kurdish, Pashto, and Uyghur. So, by learning the Arabic alphabet, you’ll be building a learning foundation for other languages too!

All 28 letters are consonants and most letters have four different forms. Arabic has vowels, but we will explain about Arabic letters and vowels a little later!

Some Arabic letters do not have a direct equivalent sound in English, which can be difficult for English speakers. An example is the widely used letter ض (Dhad) in Arabic, which is not found in other languages. Arabic is sometimes called the “Dhad language” because of this popular letter.

But don’t let that put you off! With instruction and practice, you can learn to speak Arabic well enough to be understood.

B (Arabic doesn’t actually have a letter p, so Arabic speakers pronounce “p” as “b”.)

Arabic Alphabet in Detail: 4 Important Concepts to Remember 1. Most Arabic letters have four different shapes.

In the chart above, you’ll see that we’ve listed four different “shapes” for each letter. This is because, with a few exceptions, most letters have four different forms depending on how and where they occur:

When you look at an Arabic text, you’ll notice that the Arabic letters in the words “flow” into each other (think of it as joined handwriting, ie cursive!).

The individual Arabic letters of the word are ك ت ا ب, but together they look completely different.

Some cards accept this thread, others don’t. No hostile letters (in the version name!).

While most letters sit happily next to the letter after them, six of the chosen letters are “anti-social”.

Here are six Arabic letters that do not connect with the letter after them. Instead, they pause mid-sentence.

The first and last characters are the baa character ( ب ), and the middle character is the hostile alif ( أ ).

The first baa flows directly into the alif, but the hostile alif creates a clean break. The next baab is spelled with the same letter.

Can you guess why we call them smiley letters? If you look closely, you’ll see that they look like smiley emojis :).

Arabic Alphabet: All The Letters Explained

Unlike hostile letters, smiley letters do not break the “flow”: these letters follow the same rules as many other letters. The only thing that changes is the position of the dots, above or below the vertical line above or below the “smiling mouth”.

First you’ll see baa attached to yaa, and here you’ll notice that the two points of yaa move down the curve.

Arabic uses a system called Abjad, where each letter represents a consonant (ie no vowels).

Although Arabic does not officially have vowel letters, it does have ways of making long and short vowel sounds.

There are short vowel sounds equivalent to alif ( ا ), wa ( و ) and ya ( ي ).

But this is where it gets hairy. Short vowels were once accented (also known as diacretics) above or below adjacent letters (consonants). But over time, modern Arabic has eliminated these accents. Today, you only see them in classical Arabic texts or literature, such as the Qur’an.

So how do you know how to pronounce consonants in Arabic? Context and experience. All good things come with time.

There you have it. Although it is not as easy as learning a set of Arabic letters, you have absorbed a lot of information on how to start reading and writing Arabic.
