Vocabulary Words For 2nd Graders – The ideas on how kids can learn something fun are limitless and you can always start and think with the simplest. For children in second grade, learning sight words means they have been taught to memorize sight words for immediate recall. Fun and engaging ways to teach sight word lists can be customized with children’s favorite toys or those around them. As an example, you could print out a second grade word list and create alphabet blocks on it and then build a tower based on the list. Try five to five stacks in one exercise and cycle through the list each week. This can help children to memorize and sort words quickly.
The word that is considered an important part of literacy is to read it quickly and without paying too much attention. This means you can see the words and read them without having to say them. In the second grade word list mentioned above are words that are useful in conversation. Some of the word lists for the second grader view are shown below as an example:

Using the sight word list means recognizing a word immediately and reading it at the same time without pronouncing it. The second grade sight word list also helps students add more new vocabulary as teachers can create a custom sight word list based on student ability. When children are able to read words automatically, they can improve their language skills by learning phonetic patterns. This will become a lifelong skill as we need to be quick and understand the context of words in sentences. If you just say the word and use it in a sentence, the result will not be effective because the goal is for students to read the word within a sentence. Without sight words, speech can sound muddled and text can make little sense.
A word puzzle is a puzzle in which rows of letters are arranged in a square and words are written forwards, backwards, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. How I Teach Tier 2 Vocabulary Words
In school, we typically focus on spelling Level 1 words (sight words) and teaching on Level 3 words (academic words). It’s not often that children are given explicit instructions for Level 2 words, but they should.
The table below explains the difference between the three “levels” of words. Thinking of it like a birthday cake, it makes sense that we shouldn’t skip the middle shift or shift instructions.
Beck, McKeown, and Kucan (2002, cited in Beck et al., 2013) developed a word choice model based on 3 “levels”.
As I prepared for the 2018-2019 school year, I was concerned about how I would teach vocabulary. I didn’t like what I’d done over the years and I didn’t feel like my students rejected vocabulary classes. A friend suggested I read Word Nerds: Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary by Brenda J. Overturf, Leslie H. Montgomery, and Margot Holmes Smith.

By focusing on five new words every two weeks, students learn 25 words every two weeks because I teach two synonyms and accompanying antonyms with each word.
Words Nerds suggests tons of fun games and activities that can be used to keep students engaged with vocabulary lessons.

Teaching Level 2 vocabulary ties in seamlessly with teaching parts of speech and various etymological concepts.
Depending on your students’ level, they can take more responsibility for recording their own definitions, illustrations, synonyms, antonyms and expressions in their graphic organizers.

As mentioned above, last year I decided to try this method of vocabulary teaching. I had a hard time keeping up with the planning. It took a long time to figure out which words to teach, to write word cards for the word and each of its synonyms and antonyms, and to fill in the gaps to introduce the main words. I quickly ran out of breath and went back to what I had been doing for vocabulary lessons for the last few years.
This summer I created a year-long pack containing 20 ready-to-use 3rd grade vocabulary word games. I can’t wait to use it in my classroom this year. I know following the daily vocabulary prompts will be a breeze!
After teaching these 20 sets of words, you will have specifically taught 100 Level 2 words. The best part is that students are exposed to 500 words as they also learn the synonyms and antonyms of each word!
