Vocabulary Words For 4th Graders – Level 2 vocabulary words should be taught in every class, in all classes. I’ll go into more detail about why teaching level 2 vocabulary words is important, I’ll give you examples of level 2 words, I’ll give you a list of level 2 words, and I’ll show you how to teach these words in third grade . .
“Vocabulary knowledge is the single most important factor in reading comprehension.” (Santa, Haven, Valdez, 2004) Why Level Two Words?
Vocabulary Words For 4th Graders
In school, we tend to focus on spelling grade 1 words (sight words) and grade 3 instructional words (academic words). It is rare that children receive explicit instruction from level 2 words, but they should.

The chart below explains the difference between the three words “levels”. Thinking of it as a birthday cake, it makes sense that we should not skip instructions from the intermediate level, or layers.
Beck, McKeown and Kucan (2002, cited in Beck et al, 2013) developed a model of word choice based on 3 ‘levels’.
As I prepared for the 2018-2019 school year, I worried about how I would teach vocabulary. I didn’t like what I was doing for years and I didn’t feel like my students were getting vocabulary instruction. A friend suggested I read “Word Nerds: Teaching All Students to Learn and Love Vocabulary” by Brenda J. Overturf, Leslie H. Montgomery, & Margot Holmes Smith.
This book quickly became what I dream of teaching my vocabulary to be. I’m on the ship. I decided to adopt his amazing teachings (really, read them!) and continue them with passion in my classes.

Below is an example of material included in my level 3 vocabulary set of level 2. The first is a glossary and the second is a sample plan of how I will extend this “set of words” teaching this year.
Focusing on five new words every two weeks, students are actually learning 25 words every two weeks because with each word, I teach two synonyms and the antonyms that go with them.
Word Nerds suggests lots of fun games and activities to use to keep students engaged in teaching vocabulary.
The daily vocabulary lessons are short, so they fit easily into any literacy block format. I love doing Five Daily in my class and the vocabulary mini-lesson fits perfectly between rounds.

All of the words taught can be added to your classroom word wall to encourage students to continue using these words throughout the year in reading, writing and conversation.
Level 2 vocabulary instruction relates well to teaching parts of speech and various etymological concepts.
Depending on the level of your students, they can take more responsibility in recording their definitions, illustrations, synonyms, antonyms and sentences in their graphic organizer.
As mentioned above, I decided to try this method of teaching vocabulary last year. I had a hard time following the planning involved. It took me a long time to understand what the words teach, writing word cards for the word and its synonyms and antonyms, and making short sentences to introduce the main words. I soon ran out of steam and went back to what I had done years before for vocabulary instruction.
New Words With Meaning
This summer I created a year bundle that includes 20 level 2 vocabulary sets ready to use for third grade. I can’t wait to use it in my classes this year. I know it will make following the vocabulary instructions each day a breeze!
After teaching these sets of 20 words, you will explicitly teach 100 level 2 words. The best part is: the students will be exposed to all 500 words as they will also learn the synonyms and antonyms of each word!
